The Komkan offers numerous programs and initiatives that are locally delivered here in Calgary. We are grateful and happy to connect you to our wonderful cultural professionals from various cultures and languages to provide the much-needed support to families in need by booking an appointment through the Phone: 403 620 5627. The listed are the programs and services actively run and available in the organization.
1. Komkan Basketball Academy
The Komkan Basketball Academy program aims to inspire newcomers’ youth through basketball in Calgary and the areas. The program is committed to provide a culturally required discipline and create structure to assist young adults to realize their dream goals and unleash potentials. The program offers empowerment and mentorship through sport and athletic motivation and it’s a year-round program e.g. – Indoor Fall/Winter Skills Training Programs and Outdoor Spring/Summer Skills Training Programs. The program practice is scheduled 3 days a week from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm.
2. Community Health and Family Wellness Program
The Community Health and Wellness program is a professional practice with African cultural informed-care and holistic interventions therapy. The program is intended to create the community awareness on mental health and trauma among the Black Canadians in Calgary. Komkan’s theoretical model of African informed therapy aims to eliminate the stigma of mental health with more rigorous support. This mental wellness intervention promotes community healing, services delivery, social inclusion, and mental health equity for Canada’s Black communities. Generally, the entire Calgary community are going through an emotional impact of unemployment and mental health, however, the South Sudanese suffered the most and desperately needs emotional and mental health supports. Komkan’s model of promoting mental health with African informed concept and therapy interventions approach.
3. Cultural Food Hampers Program
Koman provides cultural appropriate food to address the food insecurity situation in the community due to unemployment increment during the pandemic. The primary goal of the Cultural Food Hamper Program is to ensure access to healthy, nutritious, and culturally appropriate food while empowering individuals to make healthy food choices.
Our organization identified the community challenges when requesting assistance including language and cultural barriers to accessing food. Although, the urgent need of food is great to individuals or families and then we can easily work with families to help identify additional other supports services that are available to them. Komkan is supporting ethnic communities with cultural appropriate food through our existing trust and relationships.
4. Research and Social Justice
The Research and Social Justice program aims to improve the research and develop social justice capacity of grassroots organizations. This data collection empowers the most marginalized Black communities for equitable services and utilizes the ethnic professionals who speak multiple languages. The research program educates the cultural experts to apply anti-racism strategies and take responsibility in addressing the challenges facing our marginalized newcomers’ communities. Komkan utilizes the community elders and spiritual leaders where cultural honoring are celebrated and acknowledging the age set is considered important to the community at large. Komkan’s diverse professionals are supporting community to put all pieces of the puzzle together to deliver an integrated solution to address-resolve our province and city’s increased mental health, homelessness, and crimes problems. We offer educational training and workshops, which are reflective of the core important values to create parents’ drugs awareness and crimes prevention strategies. These educational trainings reduce gangs and drugs related activities as this is useful to address crime and deterrence to such crime being committed.
5. Life Skills and Employment Coaching Program
The Life Skills and Employment program offers support to individual newcomers to goals plan and prepare for their employment integration in Canada. The life skills and employment program build confidence and success skills in the areas of career planning, communication, assertiveness, Canadian business culture and accessing community resources.
6. Komkan SIRIE Children Program
The Komkan SIRIE Children & Youth Program is established as means of providing as healthy education foundation during the early years of children’s lives (SIRIE stands for Safety Insulate Resilience Identity, and Empowerment). The theme of this Children’s program is to develop sense of belonging to a cultural identity and self-confidence. Komkan SIRIE Children program engages in painting and drawing as a form of creative expression and self-care. The program started with activities that built structure and discipline early into the children’s life and a wellness check-in with all the participants after which they were invited to paint. Children learn to read and write from as young as two years old who are learning how to hold the pens to becomes young promising artists and showcase their talent!
